Gantt Chart

Introduction

The Gantt chart module is used to give project managers a great overview of the the current project progression and status of the individual tasks at hand.

Installation

Go to: Extensions > Module Manager and find the Gantt Chart module in the list and edit it.

On the edit screen, set the module state to "Published" and set the position to "jp-dashboard-top" (or anywhere else if you like). And finally, don't forget to assign the module to one or all menu items under "Menu Assignment".

Configuration Options

On the same screen, there are multiple configuration options that you can play with: Basic, Overview and Project Detail View.

Basic Options

Mode
In dynamic mode, the chart will render the currently active project. In manual mode, the project you've selected in the option below will rendered instead. Remember that you can duplicate the module to display multiple charts of different projects.

Project
Here you can select the project you want to render in manual mode.

Items Per Page
By default, the chart divides the displayed data into pages, so it doesn't fill up the entire screen. You can change the amount of elements that should be displayed, or configure it to show all items on one page.

Left Column Width
The left column has a fixed width set in Pixels. You may adjust the setting to your preference.

Slider Width
The horizontal slider element at the bottom also has a fixed width. Change it to your liking.

Highlight Today
If set to Yes, a yellow line is drawn vertically to indicate the current date or week, depending on your current chart zoom level.

Overview Options

Show Overview
Allows you disable/enable the chart when no project is currently active.

Filter Author
By default, all accessible projects are displayed in the overview. Changing the setting to Yes, will show only projects you have created.

Filter Complete
Select whether to show or hide completed projects. When all non-trashed tasks of a project are marked as complete, then so is the project.

Project Detail Overview Options

Show Milestones/Task Lists/Tasks
You can simply pick multiple states from the list.

Milestone Display
By default, milestones are shown as bars to indicate the total time needed to reach them. Displaying milestones as dots will render only their end dates and inverts the display logic.

Show Task Dependencies
Select when to display dependencies between tasks.

FAQ

Q: The module does not show anything. What's wrong?
If you have caching enabled on your website, make sure the module is not included. This is because the entire content is rendered using javascript and cannot be cached normally. Go to the backend of your site and edit the module. Set the "Caching" setting under Advanced Options to "No caching". You also might have to clear your existing cache after this. If that does not solve the problem or caching is not enabled, please report to us on ticket support.

Q: Why are some elements are not displayed in correct relation to their parent milestone or list?
The chart will attempt to sort elements by their hierarchy, but may fail if one or more unrelated items fall onto the same, concurrent, starting date. Gantt charts are focused on displaying a timed schedule, not on displaying logical dependencies or other relationships.

Q: What do the different colors stand for?
Gray stands for elements that have not yet started. Red elements are behind schedule. Blue elements are ongoing items. Green elements reprensent completed items.

Q: Some items I've created are not shown in the chart. Why?
There are three possibilities why items are not displayed: The items in question are trashed, or their start and end date could not be calculated. Or, you do not have viewing access for the items.

Q: Why do some items in the left column have no link on them?
The chart will show published, unpublished and archived items. If you do not have permission to edit the state of an item, and the item is not published, then you can't access it and no link is displayed.

Q: How are the start and end dates calculated?
Generally, the chart will accept fixed start and end dates as they are. If an item has no start or end date set, the chart will attempt to find the appropriate date by inheritance. First inwards, and then outwards.
For example, if you have a milestone with no start and end date, the chart will travel inwards and try to find the earliest start date and the latest end date of the tasks assigned to it. If that fails (there are no tasks assigned to it), it will travel outwards, falling back to the project start and end date.
