Easy Chat Room keeps you up to date with notifications and unread-message counts so you never miss activity. This guide explains where to find them and how to manage them.
The notification panel
- Click the bell button in the right panel's top bar.
- The notification panel opens, listing your recent notifications.
- Click a notification to jump straight to whatever it refers to.
A red number on the bell shows how many unread notifications you have.
Marking notifications as read
In the notification panel:
- Click a single notification to open it and mark it read.
- Click Mark all as read to clear every unread notification at once.
- Click Delete all to remove the whole list.
Mentions
When someone types @ and your username in a room, you receive a mention notification. Opening it takes you straight to the message that mentioned you — handy for keeping up with busy rooms.
Unread message counts
Unread counts appear in a few places so you can see activity at a glance:
- A badge on the DM tab shows unread private messages.
- A badge on the room toggle shows unread room messages.
Push notifications
Push notifications alert you to new messages even when the chat is not open in front of you.
- If push notifications are enabled on your site, the first time you use the chat your browser asks for permission to show notifications. Click Allow.
- Your device is registered automatically and will start receiving push alerts.
- You can register more than one device — each phone or computer you use is added to your account.
Installing the chat as an app gives you the most reliable push notifications on a phone. See the Installing the chat as an app section of Getting Started with Easy Chat Room.
Didn't get asked to allow notifications?
If your browser never showed the permission prompt, check these in order:
- Push notifications must be switched on for the site. Your administrator turns them on and connects a notification service; if they are off, no browser will ever ask. Check with your administrator first.
- You may have blocked or dismissed the prompt before. Once notifications are blocked, the browser stops asking. Re-enable them from the browser's site-permissions panel, then reload the chat:
- Chrome / Edge — click the sliders or lock icon at the left of the address bar and set Notifications to Allow.
- Firefox — click the icon at the left of the address bar, open Permissions, and clear or allow Send Notifications.
- Safari (macOS) — open Safari → Settings → Websites → Notifications and set the site to Allow.
- Use a supported setup. Notifications need a modern browser and a secure (
https://) connection. - On a phone, install the chat as an app (see the tip above) for the most reliable alerts.
Stopping notifications from a conversation
If one conversation is too noisy, mute it instead of turning off notifications everywhere.
- Open the conversation's options menu.
- Click Mute.
The conversation stays in your list but stops sending you alerts. See Managing Your Conversations for more.
